Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was born in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to direct a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was given she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
